On February 3, 2008 Jason Vassell was the target of a racist hate crime. Since then he has been further victimized by a racist prosecution. We, a coalition of community organizations, students and faculty, seek your support in challenging this racist prosecution.
End Jason’s Racist Prosecution!

  1. My name is Maurice Muhammad and I stand firmly with you and demand justice for our Brother. And to take on this wicked system and destroy it so that we may have true justice and and freedom. I will help in anyway I can.

    Maurice Muhammad

  2. Daniel Says:

This sounds like a simple case of racism.. but the facts are incompleat. What kind of knife was it.. a machete, pocket knife, kitchen knife??? what kind of damage did he do to his attackers? did he slit there throats, or were the stabs clearly in self defense?
Are his attackers permanently disabled..(sounds like that would be good) or did they just get minor scratches? I would think this information would be essential in deciding whether Jason should be excused/ apologized to by the attackers and school and society.. or should he face some punishment? The essential detailed facts in this article are just not there. My daughter is going to court protest for Jason.. she was sposed to be helping me.. but this was more important.

  3. Angela Shealy Says:

I can not believe this is still going on.

The DA should be ashamed of themselves.

  4. Fige Bornu Says:

Obama or no Obama, these United States are still a racist mess. I will do whatever I can to help this young man find justice.

  5. Alicia McNeil Says:

How horrific is this prosecution against a smart young man trying to get an education. Why do I state that he is “smart”? Because he tried to difuse the situation and then defendwd himself. We need justice for our brother because these racist people, think they are above the law, because they think they are the law (and unfortunately, some of them are the “law”). I am going to call in and forward this site to people on my email list to stand behind Mr. Jason Vassell. Also, I must commend Mr. Vassell’s attorney for standing up to the system and not allowing the DA’s office nor the police to get away with this horrific crime.

  6. Anthony McNeil Says:

This goes on everyday in this country and the facade that we are all ONE people with justice for all is a true fairy tale, better yet, a blatant lie. The media is controlled by the Corporations and decide what they want people to hear, or how they want them “programmed”. This is just modern day lynching on African American males. It never stopped. Just because Obama is president, I believe these types of racist, senseless, and childish acts will increase with people of color. Jason had every right to defend himself. These two parasites should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if there were true justice for all in this country! I believe if Obama or the new Attorney General of the US mentioned these types of racist, terrorist acts, people would be inclined to think and not act to these childish terrorist acts. Had it been me, I the outcome would have been possibly more severe than small wounds in self defense. It seems like these barbarians will only heed when when the tables are turned on them. I’m sick of hearing stories like this with no justice! These prosecutors should be disbarred and ashamed of themselves. But history will speak for itself when the tables are turned and this so-called civilization, falls and a new one is restored!
I fully support this brother and will contact those that I can, including the US Attorney, President Obama, and all other true law abiding citizens that stand up for justice for ALL!

  7. Dashaunna Porter Says:

i do NOT believe this poor man should be charged with ANYTHING. He was innocent and attacked by trespassers in not only a physical manner but also racially degrading way. Had he not fought back and ultimately hurt his attackers his life may have been taken considering more than 1 person was attacking him. I believe the criminal justice system is clearly in need of some adjustments and society needs to stop looking at the color of ones skin to determine whether or not one is capable of committing a crime or not. STOP turning your eye from white people commiting crimes!! So much focus on blacks in this world takes away from the criminals of other races being caught. Those men both deserve to be jailed for the crimes they committed against Jason. Jason not only should be freed, but paid for pain and suffering and apologized to by all involved. God bless u jason.

  8. Thelma Crisp Says:

It is trully sad to see that yet again another racist crime has been committed and the very people that should be upholding the law and ensuring that this young man is given due process is yet again ignoring what is plainly in front of their noses and showing their true colors. We can only hope that once the dust settle a little bit more, President Borack Obama will put measures in place to prevent these types of crimes from happening again for fear of swift retribution toward the culprits. I also will lend support in anyway I can as well as forwarding this email to all on my email list.

  9. Annette M. Says:

The meaning of justice is the following:
The quality of being just; fairness, The principle of moral rightness; equity. Conformity to moral rightness in action or attitude; righteousness. The upholding of what is just, especially fair treatment and due reward in accordance with honor, standards, or law. Law. The administration and procedure of law. Conformity to truth, fact, or sound reason
We must understand that we are dealing with mishaps who are lawless. These mishap have established their justice system for their benefit. They teach their daughters and sons the way of the lawless and they are full of destruction and deceit. However, with enough noise and support we can turn this situation around. It is time to fight for what is right! You have my support

  10. Jae Doiley Says:

I can’t believe this…they attacked HIM. HELLO? Where is justice? This kind of mess sickens me. When will people wake up?

  11. evelyn rasco Says:

the more i hear story like this it shows just how corrupt our justice styem is whites always get away and black kids get threw in to pirson they styem just dont care and as long as they are allowed to keep getting away it will get worse and worse people look at all the case you hear about injustice did to blacks we must unity and help each other if we dont they will kill all of our children a little at a time and it was just street blacks now it is children try to go to school and get a edcation and they still want to throw them away i want to do all i can to help i will call i will email and fax tomorrow on behalf of janson because this is a mother and fathers child and i no just how they fell to see you child throw away for defending his self i am the mother of jamie and gladys scott that was giving a double life sentece and never touch any one because of white man power they must be stop and the only way is to stick together as blacks

  12. V. Williams Says:

Yes We Can?? Yes we can believe that these kinds of monstrosities still happen in this day and time! The kind of attitudes you see being displayed by the prosecution has never changed…it just takes on a new form! Racism is for the most part “Covert” as opposed to “Overt”, like in the 50′s and 60′s.

I feel that this prosecuter’s shameful actions should be noted nationwide through every media avenue possible. My prayers are with this young man (and his family). I am a strong believer in people reaping EXACTLY what they sow! This prosecuter better watch out! God is a God of JUSTICE!

  13. Carol Says:

This is an incredibly sad situation, and a travesty of justice. Everyone must stand together and take action to put an end to both hate crimes and a corrupt justice system.

  14. Rae Says:

I’m missing a huge part of this story. Why did these two men come after Jason in the first place??? What was their motive? Whatever it was, I don’t think it justifies what they did nor does it excuse that Jason chose to call his friend rather than the police. But it is a missing part of the story. The differences in how the three men are treated by the legal system is APPALLING!!! Twenty years??? Attempted murder with a pocket knife???? come on!!

  15. Random White Guy Says:

My best wishes for a speedy exoneration and return to normal life.

  16. Matt Says:

Who cares what color any of them are? Self-defense is self-defense, and the two perps are the only ones, from what I know here, that should be facing criminal liability. It’s sickening.

  17. Charles R. Venator-Santiago Says:

Hello Jason, I experienced something along the same lines as you are experiencing almost 20 years ago when I was a student at UMass-Amherst. Although I was never charged, my friend was charged when he was defending me and himself from several white racists who had attacked us. Our white racist assailants were subsequently rewarded with a triple room in Southwest and the Noho DA did not bring charges against these white racists. My friend had been one of the survivors of the 1986 riots. Hang in there. I am only sorry that 20 years later the MA legal system continues to enable the same racist behavior as it has done for decades. In solidarity, Rob

  18. Cathal Brugha Says:

I just read the brief provided. I withdraw my earlier post. May justice prevail

  19. Joy W Says:

Unbelievable. 2008-09 and this is still an issue. For those of you who think race isn’t or shouldn’t be a factor, think again. It most definitely is and until THAT piece of the puzzle is eliminated, things of this nature will continue to happen. Luckliy, young people of ALL races are being the ones who pick up the cause. Justice not only for Jason is deserved but for anyone who is treated unfairly….

  20. CHANGE is what we need, and CHANGE must happen. We are in the year 2009 and racial discrimination in the “so-called” Justice system is still occurring. I pray that the jurors will see the truth! No wonder the prosecution is trying to get a new location for the trial. BUT It shouldn’t matter where the case takes place, they HAVE to see the truth and acquit this innocent man! I cant believe that this young man is now facing 30 years!! I am outraged. This just isn’t right, its so stereo-typical..and whats up with the one white kid who who hasn’t been charged with anything???? ABSURD. Something has to be done for Jason Vassell. This situation is completely unfair and unjust.

    JUSTICE FOR JASON

  21. Ange Williams Says:

Could someone let me know how everything is going. I am in Liverpool, England and I have been trying to follow what has been going on. Has the trial started yet? How is Jason? I feel so sorry for this poor guy who was attacked because of his colour. Come on people,we now live in the 21st century. This sort of thing should have stopped years ago. Does it really matter if we are black, white, yellow, purple, green or blue?
I wish all my love to Jason and his family and hopefully justice will prevail.

  22. Bishop Filipe Teixeira, OFSJC Says:

This show to us that we have a long way to go. Changes only happen when we accept and recognize the wrong doings. America is not ready for change. Of course injury to one is injury to all of us. There are son many Jason in our court systems where men of color is punished twice than the others. I stand firm with all demanding that those racist charges against our brother Jason be dismissed.
    + Bishop Teixeira, OFSJC

  23. Gayle Says:

The racial backgrounds of all of these students should NOT be a consideration in determining justice. Playing the race card merely creates more racism. The students that CLEARLY created this situation and CLEARLY assaulted this young man should be brought to justice. The fact that the victim brought a knife with him to confront these students and defend himself isn’t good. WEAPONS ON CAMPUS ARE AGAINST THE RULES ANY WAY YOU TRY TO FLIP IT (and for good reasons)! Very few young adults get through life without making some really stupid mistakes. That’s all it was – poor judgement on his part as he was being severly assaulted!! Who can think clearly at a time like that??? The charges need to be dropped and his record cleaned. His record as an excellent student with no prior involvement with law endorcement should suffice. This entire case is so ridiculous and this young man’s future is at stake. What is most disturbing, however, is why the other students were not charged with trespassing, breaking and entering, assault and battery, etc. ?? The tables seem to have been severely twisted once the victim produced a weapon.

  24. I have featured this site on my blog today.

  25. Maggie Says:

I’m a white person. I know all people can be unreal some times. I am white and love my color but i also love others and what the two white boys did makes me sick of my own people. What i have read and looked up i think that Jason sould be let free. I would have done the same thing if some one was attacking me. I had a black boy friend and i no how some people treat them the past is the past. Every one need to learn that every one is equal and should be treated the same. That every one should have the same rights and punished the same as every one else. But What They Did To Poor Jason Is Just Wrong. HE SHOULD BE LET FREE. They alread took a year of his life he will never get back. He already has to live with all of this for the rest of his life hes already been punished enough for a thing that many people would do if the were in his shoes.

  26. carly Says:

The problem here in amerikkka is that we are afraid of the government and justice; which BOTH NEEDS TO BE OVERTHROWN! in other nations this would not be toloreted. Im not advocating violence or riots but something needs to be done. Black people are hated for being born and nothing will change that.

  27. Panfilo Says:

Wow, I can only imagine what the situation would be like if the roles were flipped and it was one poor white kid that was attacked in his college dorm room by two blacks. They would be facing 20 to life.

  28. We at TOUCH 106.1 FM are watching every step of the way so make sure we know of any court hearings, etc….. it’s time for some courtroom video.
