On February 3, 2008 Jason Vassell was the target of a racist hate crime. Since then he has been further victimized by a racist prosecution. We, a coalition of community organizations, students and faculty, seek your support in challenging this racist prosecution.
02/18/2008: Pre-Trial Hearing

UPDATE:  Judge Carhart granted Vassell’s defense an evidentiary hearing on the Motion to Dismiss.  Carhart went even further by granting the defense a Discovery hearing as well. At the Pre-Trial hearing on February 18th, the Judge will be hearing a motion to dismiss filed by Jason’s Lawyers in December. Jason Vassell’s defense submitted a motion to dismiss Vassell’s indictment, No. 08-56, "on the ground that the defendant has been selectively prosecuted because of his race, in violation of the rights guaranteed him by the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and Articles I and XII of the Massachusetts Declaration of Rights." The judge has a chance to put this case on the path to justice when she considers whether or not to hear the motion. Our presence will remind the judge that she is accountable to the truth. Equally important, our presence will up the pressure on the District Attorney to be accountable to the values of her community and drop the charges.  Your support is necessary. Please attend the hearing on February 18th at 2 PM. Hearing will take place in the Hampshire Superior Court -15 Gothic St. Northampton MA 01003.
