Justice for Jason

On February 3, 2008 Jason Vassell was the target of a racist hate crime. Since then he has been further victimized by a racist prosecution. We, a coalition of community organizations, students and faculty, seek your support in challenging this racist prosecution.

How can you help organize locally?

The Committee for Justice for Jason is quickly expanding and looking for experienced organizers and committed supporters alike to join this exciting campaign. Here are some concrete action steps you can take to support Jason:

1) Attend one of our Weekly Meetings. With a very ambiguous legal timeline, and no scheduled hearings, we are continuing to build a sustainable group of organizers that can face the next months of the struggle for Justice for Jason. We have a number of events that we are planning for this summer, as well as the coming fall, and could use all the help we can get in making them happen!

2) Help mobilize for our upcoming events. Can’t come to meetings? Look out for our upcoming events. Its just as important now to continue to build the momentum.

Any sort of commitment–from a couple hours of volunteering a week, to sharing your knowledge and/or expertise with us about national media contacts, fundraising, web development, etc., to active participation in the day-to-day organizing–would be much appreciated.

3) Come to one of our open bi-Weekly study groups. As an organization and members of the local community we realize that organizing around racism for justice in our community is about lifelong learning. To build a movement that is sustainable, inclusive, creative, and energizing we need to learn lessons from other organizations, both past and present, understand the legal material relevant to Jason’s case, and be informed about the political and histroical context in which we are organizing. Come join us everyother Sunday at 6pm to think, laugh and learn from eachother.

4) Do you belong to an existing organization? Join the Western Massachusetts Coalition for Justice for Jason! So we can keep in touch with you and your organization about upcoming events and updates in Jason’s case. Or contact us and we can sit down to discuss how we can support each others’ struggles throughout the coming year.
